April 24, 2020.
Happy Friday. I saw this meme on social media yesterday. It reminded me that the first band I ever saw in concert was Iron Maiden. I know I’m not nearly cool enough for that to be even remotely believable, but it is true — and I’m about to have one hell of a quarantine.
Thank you all for your feedback (keep it coming) and your participation (ditto). If you feel a little more included and a little more heard than you did last week, we’re getting somewhere. I’ll try to do better next week.

Weekend Mailbag
I’ve received a ton of questions and comments this week, and it’s impossible to respond to them all in these emails, which are already probably too long. So I’ll try to go through a bunch of them and send out a “Mailbag” over the weekend.
Of course, if you want an answer and you’re not concerned about revealing your identity, you can always respond directly to this email. I’ll email you back. It’ll be fun!

Question 1: In which state are you currently residing?
As expected, a majority of our participants are from New Jersey and New York. We’re going to be trying to expand into other states in the weeks ahead. We’ve been growing all week, though, and we’re now at 200 subscribers and 110+ respondents to each set of questions. If you’ve got friends or family members, particularly in underrepresented states, help us grow more!
Beyond this list, though, we’ve also got participants in Louisiana, Maryland, Minnesota, Ohio, Rhode Island, Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Michigan, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Oklahoma, Tennessee and Virginia — and a few outside the United States.
Governor Andrew Cuomo Approval / Disapproval Ratings
Governor Andrew Cuomo is a constant TV presence in the New York media market (which includes New Jersey and Connecticut), so residents in those three states were asked for their approval / disapprovals of the job he’s done handling the response. He’s quite popular.
Many of our New Jersey participants also wanted share their views on the job Governor Phil Murphy is doing, so there’s a special question in today’s set for the Garden State.
Question 2: What is your age?
As expected, our participant base skews younger. Tell your parents and grandparents about us!
Question 3: Do you approve or disapprove of anti-quarantine protests?
Perhaps the most controversial question we’ve had yet. It was a tough question to fairly and accurately ask, and based on your feedback, a tough question to fairly answer.
While the overwhelming majority of respondents said they disapprove of the anti-quarantine protests, many expanded on their answers.
One person wrote “I disagree with the protestors but I agree with their right to do so.”
Another wrote “The protests are absolutely NOT grassroots protests. These are funded and entirely organized… by right wing groups.”
One more wrote “I approve of the right for the protestors to assemble and voice their concerns (peacefully), but I do not at all agree with their viewpoint. Early openings have the potential to be quite scary.”
Question 4: Do you have a favorable, unfavorable or no opinion of Dr. Anthony Fauci?
Dr. Fauci is really popular with our participant base. The most fascinating thing, though, is the 100% name identification. We all know who he is, which is actually pretty amazing. The Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is a household name in America.
Dr. Fauci has served in that role since 1984. How many of us would have been able to identify him last year? (Not I.)
Question 5: Have you or an immediate family member received payment from any of the US Government’s economic response programs?
Almost 2/3 of participants have received some sort of payment from an economic response program.
Most think the payments have been at least somewhat helpful, though some folks noted that they received payments but weren’t actually in desperate need for money.
Others expressed frustration that payments haven’t yet arrived, that payments aren’t big enough to be impactful or that the government’s response is too skewed towards helping large corporations rather than helping people. We’ll continue to talk about this more in the days and weeks ahead.
