May 26, 2020.
Good Tuesday Morning. We’re back after the long weekend. Hopefully you were all able to relax and find some enjoyment. A couple quick mailbags.
First, some shots were fired over the weekend at the Occam’s Razor Fan Club.
Devotees of Occam’s razor should be mindful of A N Whitehead’s dictum: Simple solutions are bogus solutions.
And also, one of our users shared a wonderful, heartwarming story in the comments section on Friday.
Have a fabulous, relaxing weekend !!! My son is a paramedic in Jersey City….just returned in December from a tour as an Army Combat Medic in Africa…… I get to hug him this Sunday after 84 days….. these men and women are truly isolated and crave hugs!!!!

Question 1: Have you heard of the new audio-only social media app, Clubhouse?
The buzzy new Silicon Valley startup recently raised $10 million (and is now valued at $100 million), but to date, it’s been an exclusive, invite-only platform. Only 10% of Tina users have even heard of it, and not a single one of us was able to snag an invite. Bummer.
Question 2: The CDC published a 60-page document this week with guidelines for how schools, childcare centers, restaurants, public transit and other businesses can reopen safely. How comfortable would you feel visiting one of those places upon opening? (Or how comfortable did you feel if you already have?)
This question frustrated some of you, and rightfully so, as it conflated a couple of different places about which you feel differently.
Going into a school, eating inside at a restaurant, eating outside at a restaurant and riding public transit all have different risk profiles.
Still, the results (average of 2.8) suggest that folks are still nervous about returning to normal life.
If I get the virus it's on me. I have the mask but occasionally feel weird wearing them. Like when I pick up my food from the food truck my apt complex brought in...its in my pocket but haven't put it on. My gym is reopening next week and I'm not quite ready to go back yet.
Question 3: Do you think it’s important or unimportant that elected officials wear masks in public?
Even though elected officials (and those around them) are often tested every day, a large majority of you still think it’s important that elected leaders wear masks in public. We saw this contrast on display this weekend.
As one user put it:
Public officials should wear masks when in a setting that could jeopardize other people like visiting a factory surrounded by workers.
Question 4: Do you believe you have any responsibility for contributing to the spread of the virus?
Even though it was difficult to answer, I loved this user-submitted question — especially given the comments so many of you shared in response.
The responsibility question was hard to answer. Do I believe that I may have spread the virus? It’s possible. I traveled several times in the first 3 months of the year and I work in a school. Do I know that I spread it? No. Did I make a choice after lockdown that I believe spread the virus? No. Could I have? Yes. I understand the idea of the question but it’s hard to answer with the way it is worded.
On contributing to the virus...while I don’t think I’ve contributed to reckless behavior since we’ve been sheltering in place, right before that I did have a St. Patrick’s Day party. It wasn’t the rager of my early 20s, but a total of ~20 people passed through my house during the day. But no more than 12 at any given time, which was the limit subsequently imposed, prior to shelter in place. So I don’t feel guilt for knowingly or recklessly contributing to the spread...but I could have, while still operating under the best knowledge available at the time.
It's pure hubris to answer "no" to having spread the virus. The virus was in the country over a month before "social distancing" became a household term. Many people are asymptomatic carriers.
Question 4- I am a healthcare worker, I very well could have an asymptomatic infection. J have tried to follow all restrictions, limit any chance of transmitting an infection to others, etc. However I do need to go to the grocery store and do other necessary errands. I hope I have not contributed to the spread of COVID19 by doing so, but I have no way to of knowing. We should all assume that we could be asymptomatic carriers.
Even though I’ve been quite strict with social distancing and not going into work, I don’t think I’ll ever truly know if I contributed to spreading the disease. I still think I could have been an asymptomatic carrier!
Question 5: On a scale of 0 (the worst) to 10 (the best), how are you feeling overall?
The Weekly Sentiment Index ticked down to 7.0 this week from 7.2 last week.
But some individual good news:
For the "how are you question," I have been consistently saying 5 for the past few weeks. Being home all the time has really taken its toll. However, I have plans to be out of the house, outside, and socially distancing from friends each day this weekend. So in this moment - 7 for the win! Happy weekend Tina! :)
