Good Monday Morning. The protests across the country have spurred conversations questioning whether law enforcement needs reforming — and if it does, what specifically should change.
In the days ahead, we’re going to talk about whether you would support some of the proposals being discussed. Because many law enforcement decisions are made at the local level, we’ll also talk about our own communities.
And, because we’re still in a pandemic, we’ll talk about those topics as well.

Question 1: Do you have a favorable or unfavorable opinion of James Mattis, the retired four-star Marine Corps general and former Secretary of Defense?
Despite the “Mad Dog for President” comments in the feedback, a large portion of our user base doesn’t have a strong opinion of Former Secretary of Defense James Mattis.
I’ve had a negative opinion of Mattis’ hawkish politics but his recent public criticism of Trump has improved my opinion slightly.
Mattis, who served as President Trump’s first Secretary of Defense, criticized the President (and the President’s response to the protests) last week. Had we known he’d be making that public statement, we could have asked this question a few weeks ago — and compare those results to these results.
Question 2: Do you think it's generally appropriate for politicians to use places of worship as backdrops for political speeches and photo opportunities?
Though many of you think it’s not generally appropriate, some in the comments pointed out that the dynamics are meaningfully different if the political leader is speaking at the invitation of the congregation.
Question 3: Do you have a favorable opinion or unfavorable opinion of Colin Kaepernick?
In 2016, the NFL quarterback created controversy when he took a knee during the national anthem in protest. Now, during some protests across the country, some law enforcement officers have knelt as a sign of solidarity with protesters.
Kaepernick should be hired ASAP by a team that wants to make a statement.
Question 4: Have the events of the last week impacted your opinion of Colin Kaepernick?
This question was asked of respondents who said they have a favorable opinion of Colin Kaepernick, checking whether the last few weeks have made folks more or less sympathetic to him — and his protest.
