Happy Friday!
Many states are facing significant budget shortfalls cause by the coronavirus. Some state governors, including New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, have discussed an idea to help raise state revenue:
Is legalizing recreational marijuana as a way to drive additional state revenue a good idea? Or a bad idea? We’d like to hear from you.
To end the week, we’ve also got some questions asking whether governors or local officials should be making decisions about mask mandates and social distancing, programs aimed at empowering Black residents, an Oxford comma debate and the latest installment of our weekly Sentiment Index. Have a great weekend, everyone.

A few weeks back, we had some difficult conversations about sexual trauma. Like many of you, we were dismayed at how pervasive this issue was in our community. With some help from some members of our community, we’ve put together a list of resources that may be helpful to those still struggling.
Herd runs a weekly support group for women who have been impacted by sexual trauma.

Question 1: Are you favor of the death penalty for a person convicted of murder?
Again many of your questions lead to an unrealistic answer. You can't just have a yes or no answer. Do you believe in death penalty. It depends on circumstances. For a serial killer or premeditated and kills a family, yes. Someone killed in a fight, accidentally or in heat of passion. No. So a choice of "depends on circumstance" would be appropriate.
I simply don’t believe that a moral and enlightened society can justify taking one life for another. It doesn’t do any good, it is expensive, and the extremely high rate of wrongful conviction means that there is always a more than zero chance that it becomes state sanctioned murder if an innocent person is killed. I highly recommend the movie “Just Mercy” for an emotional and historically influenced view into this issue.
Re: Death Penalty. As a Catholic I truly believe in respecting the sanctity of life. The reason I opted for 'I'm not sure' is that while I was in high school my cousin was killed in the line of duty as a police officer. The very public funeral and ensuing trial, which I attended made this issue very complicated. The DA was seeking the death penalty, and at the time, in those emotions, I didn't feel opposed to it. I'm not proud of that feeling, but I had a hard time thinking that man didn't deserve it. He got life in prison, the death penalty was taken off the table.
I’m a conservative but educated on the subject. I’m very pro law enforcement yet the use of the death penalty in this country is atrocious. Current statistics reveal it has long history (continuing up to today) of being race based, more expensive than life imprisonment, hardly a deterrent, and used on individuals who were later shown to be innocent based on DNA evidence. How we, as a civilized society, continue to have the death penalty is remarkable to me.
Question 2: Walmart announced that it would require customers wear face masks in all of its stores nationwide. Does this decision make you more or less likely to shop at Walmart?
Question 3: Have you traveled out of state for a service (e.g. haircut, manicure / pedicure, dentist appointment) that has been closed in your state?
Not many! For the small number of folks who said yes, the answers were a mix of haircuts, waxings, work-related trips or eating & shopping indoors.
Question 4: What do you think of mayonnaise?
Mayo has its place, but its heyday is thankfully over.
Mayo had a heyday? And now it’s over? I have more questions now than I did before.
Make it all the way through but forget to answer today’s questions?
