Should the US deport international students whose schools operate online this fall?
July 7, 2020
Good Tuesday Morning.
Welcome back! As colleges and universities grapple with reopening this fall amidst the coronavirus pandemic, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced a new policy yesterday. International students at colleges and universities that will operate entirely online this fall will not be able to remain in the country. So today, we’ll talk about that.
We’ve also got some questions about Hamilton on Disney Plus, China’s new security law in Hong Kong and presidential campaign donations. One of our users also wants to know if you’ve taken up any outdoor hobbies since the start of COVID.

Question 1: Some states have issued statewide mandates requiring all people to wear masks when in public and social distancing is not possible. Would you support or oppose President Trump issuing a nationwide mask mandate?
A nationwide mask mandate could be broadly popular, but it wouldn’t be unanimous:
I am perfectly fine with private businesses requiring customers to wear masks. That is their right on their property. It becomes an issue when the state (federal, State, city) mandates and requires that people wear masks. Individual freedom is a great thing in this country and if someone doesn’t want to protect themselves that is their right. If a restaurant or store requires shoes and shirts be worn to enter their establishment, however, people must follow and respect what the property owner requires.
But then again…
While i feel masks are uncomfortable while wearing. Face gets hot and feel stifled i wear one for the overall benefit
And…
I truly don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t want to wear a mask. I love wearing a mask. I like being mysterious.
Question 2: How did you vote in the 2016 Presidential Election?
The results of this week’s 2020 Presidential campaign tracker are broken down by 2016 vote. Is Donald Trump growing or shrinking his base? Is Biden growing his base beyond Clinton voters? How are non-voters or third-party voters from 2016 feeling about 2020?
We wanted to find out.
Of those who voted for Trump in 2016:
This is bad news for President Trump. Of those in the Tinaverse who voted for him in 2016, only 63% are committed to voting for him again.
Perhaps even more worrisome for the President: nearly 13% of Tina users who voted for Donald Trump in 2016 plan to vote for Joe Biden this fall.
Of those who voted for Clinton in 2016:
Donald Trump hasn’t (at least as of now) converted a single Clinton voter in the Tinaverse… but it’s not all good news for Biden.
Overwhelmingly, Biden supporters in the Tinaverse say they are voting AGAINST Donald Trump more than voting FOR Joe Biden.
My motivation for the upcoming presidential election: I've got very mixed feelings. I REALLY do not want Trump to get elected, and although Biden is the front runner against him, I'm feeling very meh about Biden. It's not reasonable to assume Marvel President Man will swoop down to save the day, but I might, for the first time ever, consider a write-in candidate (knowing full well that my vote would take away from an established candidate). I'm frustrated.
Of those who voted for someone else in 2016:
Biden leads with voters who voted for someone other than Trump or Clinton in 2016. Though not a majority, Biden’s plurality in this group suggests voters who couldn’t bring themselves to hold their noses and pull the lever for Trump or Clinton aren’t as allergic to Biden.
Of those who did not vote in 2016:
Interestingly, all of the Tina users who sat out the 2016 election plan to vote in 2020.
Biden’s got the lead in that group.
We asked those who plan to vote for Joe Biden which potential VP candidate they’d like to see added to the ticket:
When we last asked this question (on May 8), Senator Elizabeth Warren was in the lead with 30%. She was trailed by Klobuchar (who has since removed her name from consideration) at 29%, Harris at 27%, Abrams at 6% and Rice at 5%.
But now:
There are a number of those VP picks I would love to see! I’m a big Warren fan but recognize that having a Black woman on the ticket lends a much needed perspective and visibility to an old white dudes campaign
Biden has to choose a moderate running mate to swing folks who voted for Trump last time. Liberals are so concentrated in cities. The only way to win is to swing moderates.
On a scale of 0 (the worst) to 10 (the best), how are you feeling overall?
Average: 7.2
Asking all of those election questions right before the sentiment question definitely lowered my response haha
And to think, it’s only July…
My weekly check in score is trending is down a bit this week. As someone who rode out March through May in NYC, I was hopeful that social distancing would mean controlling the spread of the virus and would allow steady openings and more relaxed social events in the not-so-distant future. But with the new and rapid increases in cases around the US, the reality seems to be that the social distancing limbo where we find ourselves may last for much longer than I would have hoped. Interested to see how others feel here too.
